THE EUCHARIST: Sacred Meal, Sacrifice, Real Presence

This is not currently being offered; check back for updates

The Eucharist is the “Source and Summit” of our Christian life…of our faith. But how well do we understand this vital sacrament? Take six weeks this coming winter to delve into this gift from God and ponder how It is not simply a symbol but truly the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, Himself; how the Eucharist brings us into greater unity with the blessed Trinity and gives us a foretaste of God’s heavenly Kingdom.

This topic is especially relevant at this point in time because our bishop, Bishop Barber, is calling all Catholics “home” to the Eucharist in 2023, culminating in a Eucharistic Revival Congress in mid-September as part of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ National Eucharistic Revival, a three-year “grassroots revival of devotion and belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.”

During 30-minute videos viewed each week as a study group (see schedule below), Bishop Barron will present a fresh look at the Eucharist to bring to light the reality of this sacred meal; he will illustrate how the Eucharist is foreshadowed in many parts of the old testament and how this sacrament reunites us with God.  Together, we will consider how the Eucharist is not a luxury, but a necessity, for without It, in the spiritual sense, we would starve to death. The source and summit of the Christian life, It is both the fountain from which life in Christ flows and the goal toward which It tends; It is the alpha and the omega of Christian discipleship; It is the energy without which authentic Christianity runs down. The Body and Blood of Jesus are not simply the sacred objects at the center of the Church’s concern; they are the Church: its lifeblood, its raison d’etre.

We continue to obey Jesus’ command, “Do this in memory of Me,” realizing that our spiritual lives depend upon the Eucharist the way that our physical lives depend upon food, oxygen, and water. So, now, let’s take the time to really understand the essence and magnitude of this great gift.
